Can you have a second chance at a first love?

Nick Paine is just starting to return to normal after he told his wife he’s gay and asked for a divorce. Despite a daughter he loves dearly and a job he believes in, part of him is stuck in the past. He’s never forgotten the first love he let fade away fourteen years ago.

Adam “Izz” Azzi has settled into a happy rhythm. His daughter is healthy, he’s found a mosque that accepts him, and his work as a modern artist is gaining international attention. While his past is fraught with mistakes and what-ifs, his life now is good, and he doesn’t want to upset any of the balance he’s worked so hard to achieve.

When Nick and Izz are reunited by luck and fate, their attraction is just as undeniable, but what was left unsaid haunts them. They have hope for a future together, but wishing may not be enough.

    Excerpt:

    CHAPTER ONE

NICK PAINE tried to duck as a gigantic scarlet bird whipped over his head and he began to lose his balance. The first airborne attack was followed a second later by a screech and another swooping red streak that caused him to crouch and fall to his knees. At least he was wearing jeans today instead of a suit.

Katie snorted, let loose a torrent of giggles, and pointed. “He’s not going to hurt you, Daddy.”

“Isn’t it me who’s supposed to be telling you that?” Nick scrunched his eyebrows together and tried to chastise his daughter while also searching the birdhouse for further threats.

Katie rolled her eyes and flipped her long blonde hair off to the side, appearing much older than her eight years. “Come on, Daddy. I’ll protect you.” She offered her hand, and Nick grinned as he stood, taking her tiny hand in his.

It was a Wednesday morning, one in which Nick should have been sitting in a colorless conference room listening to doctors and administrators fight each other over inane operational details, but despite the threat of being pecked to death by tropical birds, Nick didn’t want to be anywhere else.

It was rare he was able to escape from work during the day, and this field trip to the zoo with Katie’s class had been the perfect excuse. The hospital system was always there. It was a twenty-four-hour seven-day-a-week commitment of utter chaos. Nick still wasn’t quite sure how he’d ended up as a vice president by the age of thirty-three, but had to concede his success had a lot to do with the inordinate number of hours he spent downtown. His generous salary was meant to compensate him for the endless hours on call talking nurses and cardiologists off the ledge while also making sure all their equipment and staffing needs were met. He loved his job and he was good at it, but it took him away from Katie way too much for his liking.

Nick pushed aside thoughts of the hospital. He would be flooded with e-mails, texts, and voice mail as soon as he switched his cell back on. Instead he listened to Katie patter on about the different kinds of birds that filled the zoo aviary.

“How do you know so much about them?” Nick asked as he forced his complete attention back to her.

Katie shrugged in a gesture that was too much like her carefree Uncle Roban. “I watch the National Geographic channel.”

    “That much?”

Katie huffed. “Yeah, Daddy. A lot. Loads and loads.”

Nick restrained a laugh. Where had she come up with that phrase? She was growing up so fast. Much too fast for his liking. The years just kept slipping by, and as hard as his path had been as of late, Nick was grateful for the luck he did have. Katie was a beautiful girl. Tall and thin, just like her momma, she had blonde hair shades lighter than his that ran down to her waist and snarled easily with how fine it was. He’d given up attempting to brush the mats out a year ago, leaving the task to Katie’s grandmother or her nanny.

“Look at the baby geese!” Katie exclaimed, letting go of his hand and running full tilt down the pathway toward the birds. Then just as suddenly she was veering off again, a delighted squeal emanating from her. “A waterfall!”

Nick dug into his pockets as he walked to catch up, knowing what she was going to ask even before she said anything.

“I want to make a wish,” she pleaded, looking up at him with wide eyes.

Nick placed a quarter in her outstretched hand, earning a satisfied smile from her.

She scrunched her eyes tightly closed and whispered something Nick couldn’t hear, then tossed the coin into the water.

“What did you wish for, baby girl?” Nick asked, as was part of their routine.

“Daddy, you know I can’t tell you,” she protested with a pout. “Or else it won’t come true.”

Of course he knew that. Katie wanted to flip a coin into every fountain they encountered. And she always went about it as if her whole existence was placed into making that one wish come true. But she never told Nick what it was that she silently hoped for.

Nick had to wonder if she would remember this later on. If she would remember what she wished years from now, or at the very least remember enough to tell him later whether or not they came true.

Nick looked into her brown eyes—so much like his but with a fire that was all her own—and his breath caught. Yeah, he was just about the luckiest man in the world. She stood on her tiptoes, cupped her hands around his cheeks, and planted a kiss on his lips that left Nick with an ear-to-ear grin that he wouldn’t be able to wipe off for hours to come.

Dragon’s Eye; by Lexi Anders—Blog Tour and Giveaway

    Today I get to host Lexi Anders, which is pretty exciting since I have a signed addition of Twin Flames, book one of Sumeria’s Sons. (Hint, if you’ve not read it or the others in the series, you’re missing out.)  So when I was given the chance to host part of her tour I was thrilled.  {Update – yep thrilled and a bit stupid as I forgot to post this on time today SMH – Sorry Lexi.}

Lexi is going to enlighten us with some background on the Sumerian Pantheon and then give you an exclusive excerpt from book five in the series, Dragon’s Eye. Read on, enter the contest, but most of all, buy the books.

    Sumerian Pantheon

When Surrounded by Crimson came out, there was a question about which gods were the good guys and which were bad. That was a little hard to split up because the Sumerian gods weren’t categorized as good/bad or angels/demons until much later in history after the patriarchal views were more firmly established in the culture. What I can do is divide out and identify the gods who are villains in the series. Something else to note, the Glossary of Gods in the back of the books has been updated with the release of Dragon’s Eye. There were certain things I couldn’t add without giving away spoilers. ^_^

The first three tiers of the pantheon make up the primordial gods. Then comes the major gods and then the minor. The gods used in Sumeria’s Sons have been placed in bold. One thing to remember is that all the Gods/Goddesses procreated with many others, related and not. Some have primary consorts but that has a looser meaning that what we would think of today.

    Tier One: The Creation Gods

Tiamat – Goddess of Salt Water

Abzu – God of Sweet Water

In my world, Tiamat isn’t evil. She was lied to by Kingu which started the Igigi War. Her power has diminished but she’s still a force to be reckoned with.

    Tier Two: The Cosmos

Lahamu and Lahmu – meaning parent stars or constellations. Sometimes called the “Muddy Ones” because they represented the silt beds. Together they gave birth to the Mesopotamian Pantheon

Mummu – God of Knowledge, craftsman, life giving force

Nammu – Mother of Anu and Ki and Enki, Goddess of the Sea,

Tier Three – The Celestial Poles

Anshar (Ashur) – Sky Father, Skypivot, Horizon of Heaven, Whole Heaven

Kishar – Earth Mother, Earthpivot, Horizon of Earth, Whole Earth

Ashur is essentially good, he just doesn’t explain his actions.

    Tier Four

Anu (An) – Son of Anshar and Kishar, God of the Sky (Heaven), Judge (His attendant and minister of state, the god Ilabrat, bit off his penis and Ilabrat became pregnant and gave birth to three gods.)

Enlil – Son of Anshar and Kishar, God of Breath and Wind

Ninlil – Consort to Enlil, Goddess of Harvest

Uras – Consort of Anu, Goddess of the Earth, Mother of Ninsun

Ninsun – Dau of Anu and Uras, “lady wild cow”, mother of Gilgamesh, tutelary of Gudea and Lagash

Enlil is not one of my favorite Gods, but I don’t paint him in a good or bad light. You decide.

    Major Gods:

Ereshkigal – God of Irkalla, Queen of the Underworld

Gugalanna – The Great Bull of Heaven, Consort to Ereshkigal, Sumerian Deity known today as the constellation Taurus.

Enki (Ea) – Son of Anu and Nammu, Twin to Ereshkigal, God of Sweet Water, God of Wisdom

Shamash (Utu) – Son of Ningal and Sin, brother to Ereshkigal, God of the Sun, God of Justice, God of Truth

Ishkur (Adad) – Son of Ningal and Sin, brother to Shamash, God of Storms, Inspector of the Cosmos,

Ki (Ninhursag) – Goddess of the Mountains, Fertility Goddess, Consort of Anu, Consort of Enki

Sin (Nanna/Su’en) – Son of Enlil and Ninlil, God of the Moon

Kingu – “Unskilled Laborer”, Consort of Tiamat, I’ve never come across text that stated what he was God of.

Nergal – Son of Enlil and Ninlil, God of the Noontime Sun, God of the Summer Solstice, God of War and Pestilence, The King of Sunset, Consort to Laz,

Inanna – Goddess of Sacred Sex and Fertility, Consort of Dumuzid, Not originally from Sumer. Later she claims sisterhood with Ereshkigal.

Dumuzid – “The Fisherman”, Consort to Inanna, King of Uruk to rule 36,000 years.

Ngeshtin-ana – Sister to Dumuzid, sacrificed to the underworld with Dumuzid by Inanna, Goddess of the Heavenly Grapevine, Consort of Ningisida God of the Underworld, Dau of Enki and Ki (Ninhursag)

    Enkimdu – God of Farming

    Lesser Gods:

Marduk – Son of Enki and Damkina, God of Storms, Solar Calf, Later associated with water, vegetation, judgement, and magic, Consort of Sarpanit, rival of Ashur (Assur)

Uttu – Dau of Enki and Ninkurra, Goddess of Time, Weaver of the Web of Life, the Spider.

Ishara – Goddess of the Binding Oath/Promise, Goddess of Love, Goddess of Oath

Damgalnuna (Damkina) – One of Enki’s consorts, Consort to Enlil, Mother of Marduk, Goddess of Vegation, she doesn’t leave Dilmun.

Ninurta – Son of Enlil and Ki (Ninhursag), God of Hunting and War

Nisaba – Dau of Enlil and Ninlil, Goddess of Writing, Learning, and Grain

Pabilsag – Son of Enlil and Ninlil, tutelary God of Isin, Consort of the goddess Ninsun (Nininsinna)

Enbilulu – Son of Enlil and Ninlil, God of Rivers and Canals, deity of irrigation and farming

Nungal – Dau of Ereshkigal, Goddess of the Underworld, Queen of the Ekur, Holder of the Tablet of Life, Consort to Birdu.

Birdu – Consort to Nungal, God of the Underworld

Namtar – Son of Ereshkigal and Enlil, God of Death, Minister and Messenger of Anu, Ereshkigal, and Nergal

Ninazu – Son of Ereshkigal and her consort Gugalanna, generally benevolent, God of the Underworld and Healing, Consort of Ninsutu.

Ningisizida – Ninazu and Ninsutu, God of the Underworld, Lord of the Good Tree, Guardian of Anu’s Celestial Palace.

Ninsutu – Consort to Ninazu, dau of Enki and Uttu, Goddess of Vegetation.

Nabu – Marduk’s son, God of Wisdom

Ningal – Dau of Enki and Ningikuga, Consort to Sin, Goddess of the Reeds

Damu – Dau of Ninsun and Pabilsag, Goddess of Vegetation and Rebirth

Lahar – Both God and Goddess of Cattle, brother to Ashnan Goddess of Grain, both children of Enlil.

Humbaba – The Terrible, Guardian of the Cedar Forest

Uttu is a semi-neutral Goddess in the series although you can guess that she does side with Tristan, even if she can’t ‘help’ him. Ishara was invoked when Tristan accepts Blood Oaths. As for Marduk, I don’t like him. You can find out more during the tour. He has his own blog post. ^_^

A huge thank you for allowing me to be a guest on the blog today! Excerpts:

    Chapter One

    **Ushna**

The God Ashur followed behind me carrying Tristan, whose body was battered and broken. The cry of our newborn pups preceded me. Their birth was supposed to be a wondrous occasion, but through treachery and lies, that was stolen from us. Instead of enjoying the happy moment, I feared Tristan was dying.

There was so much blood. The damage to his body overwhelmed my senses. I was afraid if I didn’t keep my eyes on him, if I turned my back for a second too long, his Flame would slip away. We ran through the cursed caverns that wouldn’t allow me to touch my wolf or feel the song of the earth. Ashur’s harsh commands to hurry spurred me on faster but I had to look behind me, I had to see with my own eyes that Tristan was still with us, still fighting.

The scars… I couldn’t care less but Tristan might. I vowed I would spend the rest of my life showing him how beautiful he was to me—but first we had to get him out into the open.

    I glanced back. “Hurry, Ashur.”

The corridor seemed much longer than when we’d come in. Glancing over my shoulder again to ensure Ashur followed closely, my impatience caused a snarl to rumble in my throat. Tristan’s skin was a gray-blue, stark and sickly against Ashur’s rich mahogany tone. With every passing moment, we were losing him.

“Please.” I don’t know if I begged Ashur to go faster or if it was a plea to the Gods to spare Tristan’s life.

When we entered the darkened corridor carved from the bedrock, I heard Tristan sigh. For months, he’d been teaching me how to listen to the Earth and I could practically feel her rush to him. I climbed the stairs, my foot slipping on the wet step in my hurry to get outside.

The open air had never smelled so good, filling my lungs with the scents of life. My wolf stirred, frantic for our mate. I reached to take Tristan from Ashur, but he dodged my grasp, moving off to the side. His low voice had a musical tone as he chanted in a language I didn’t recognize and next to him, a hole formed in the ground.

“What are you doing? You said all we had to do was get him outside!” Why was Ashur not singing the song for healing? I reached again to take Tristan from Ashur’s arms. Tristan was teaching me the complex chant, but Ashur was Tristan’s tutelary. He knew what to ask the Earth for and how. Why was he not begging her to save Tristan’s life? She wouldn’t say no. She’d never say no to Tristan because she adored him.

It took a moment for the haze of my frantic thoughts to subside enough to realize Ashur was talking and then another for me to process the meaning of his words. What did he mean he couldn’t restore Tristan’s health?

With rising alarm, I said, “You’ve been teaching him how to sing to the Earth. Why can’t you do that now?”

Ashur dodged me, laying Tristan in the hole atop the dark loamy soil. Something eased in me seeing Tristan in contact with the ground, although the Earth didn’t rush up to him as I’d expected. She never missed an opportunity to touch him… until now. Instead, I felt power build until my bones ached and the snakes on my chest writhed in discomfort.

Staring down, I searched for the source of the energy, sure that at any moment, whatever it was would show itself. My gaze continued to return to Tristan with his ruined eyed, his torso ravaged and gaping. Never had I seen him so vulnerable, so small, the very sight calling to the caretaker within me.

Tearing my gaze away, I confronted Ashur who was pleading with me. “I teach him the songs but She doesn’t respond to me.”

An ancient sadness shone in Ashur’s visage but I didn’t care. I had trusted him to save Tristan. Never before had I been filled with such useless rage. I didn’t understand what Ashur was saying. Who was he talking about? The Earth? He was the king’s tutelary, so why wouldn’t the Earth answer his call?

Desperation rose up and I barked, “Why the fuck not?”

“Because I took the wrong side in a war, now I’m forever separated from Her.”

What did that have to do with the here and now? What did it matter he’d lost something or someone? My Tristan was dying and all he could do was talk. Ashur’s pleading gaze held mine and I suddenly understood. I glanced back down at Tristan, lying in a bed of fresh dark soil.

    A grave.

“No! You cannot mean to do this. He’s not dead!” I jumped into the hole; Tristan’s single eye stared at me with clarity, despite the state of his body. His chest rose and fell with each labored breath. There was still time. I could save him.

With the strength of the God he was, Ashur wound his arms around my waist and easily hauled me away from Tristan.

    I went mad.

I fought, screamed and begged. First Brian and now Tristan. How was I to stay behind? I pleaded with Ashur to allow me to go with Tristan. We’d travelled through the Earth together before, we could do it again. I could sing to the Earth and beg for Her help.

    It wasn’t too late.

Then Ashur chanted and the soil covered Tristan, taking him from my sight. I roared with fury, thrashing and clawing at Ashur’s hands. I vowed vengeance for this act of betrayal. Silently, Ashur held me as I beat and wailed upon him, trying to free myself from his steely grasp. He whispered continuously, “I am sorry but this had to be done,” in my ear. Tears of grief stained my cheeks and I hated him all the more because it didn’t have to be like this. He had no right to take Tristan from me.

    Exclusive Excerpt #1

Only when I was utterly spent and left gasping for breath, my muscles weak and trembling, did Ashur release me. Collapsing onto my hands and knees, I dug my fingers into the loose dirt and sang, my voice hoarse and broken. I bid the earth to come and help Her child in need. Were we not created from Her soil? Did we not rest in Her bosom, waiting for rebirth? Did She not love Tristan above all? I thought She did. Desperately I wanted to believe that Her behavior toward Tristan meant he was special to Her.

I raised my voice in song, pushing everything I felt for Tristan into my request. In the end, She rose up to sooth me, but She didn’t reply to my plea. She didn’t bring Tristan back to me.

    About the Author:

Lexi has always been an avid reader, and at a young age started reading (secretly) her mother’s romances (the ones she was told not to touch). She was the only teenager she knew of who would be grounded from reading. Later, with a pencil and a note book, she wrote her own stories and shared them with friends because she loved to see their reactions. A Texas transplant, Lexi now kicks her boots up in the Midwest with her Yankee husband and her eighty-pound puppies named after vacuum cleaners.

  • Devotion; by Grace R. Duncan—Blog Tour and Giveaway

My friend Grace R. Duncan is here today to give us a bit more insight into her latest release, Devotion.

    Devotion_headerbanner

I am very appreciative to Andrew for giving me time today here in the Land of Make Believe. Thank you! Continuing the interview, let’s see what else Tanner and Finley will tell us.

    * * *

So, back to serious for a moment, what do you like best about yourself? Least?

Tanner sighs. Let me tackle the least, first. At the risk of sounding repetitive… the tendency to keep things to myself. I almost lost the most important thing in my life to that fault and I’d love to be able to get rid of it. On the flip side… I like the fact that when I’ve finally gotten my head out of my ass, I don’t fuck around. I do what I’ve got to do to fix it.

Finley laughs. I’d say so. Finley glances at Tanner then back. Like flying… For me… Well, I like to think, for the most part, I’m pretty easy-going. It takes a lot to push me to where I lash out.

Tanner chuckles. Definitely. Uh… two years?

Finley nods. Yeah, two years. That said, I know I can be impulsive. I mean, yeah, sometimes that’s not a bad thing, but sometimes I really ought to sit back and think things through a little more. I also used to keep more to myself. I could have—should have—asked Tanner a lot more directly than I did.

Well, then, let me turn this around. What do you like best about your partner? Least?

Finley bites his lip. For all that Tanner can be stubborn—and that’s probably the thing I like least—he also is very perseverant. He’ll push to do what needs to be done. It’s a good trait for an alpha and it’s probably a bit part of what helped us get past our issues. And, well, he’s got a really nice—

So, Finley’s impulsiveness—Finley laughs at being cut off and Tanner grins—has two sides to it. I end up being a lot more spontaneous—in a good way—than I would otherwise be. I tend to think things through a lot, so there’s definitely a positive to that. On the other hand… it’s certainly caused us a few… um… problems.

    Finley snorts. A few?

Tanner grins. Only a few. He kisses Finley quickly. I guess our relationship is still too new. I haven’t really found much I like least about him. Except maybe when we’re in bed, he has this tendency to—.

Right, so… next question! Finley blushes bright red.

*grin* Okay, okay. So… What do you want from life? What are your ultimate goals?

Tanner smiles. Well, eventually, I’ll be alpha. I want to be a good one. I’d like to see the pack business do well and be part of making it that way. Maybe, eventually, find a way for us to have a couple of pups.

Finley grins. After I’m not a pup anymore?

Tanner rolls his eyes. Yeah, yeah, you’re not a pup anymore. Tanner shakes his head.

For me… well, I want to be a good alpha mate. I want to see the pack grow and do well. I’m hoping to do what I can make the forests around pack lands better for us as well as the animals. And, yeah, I’d like pups someday. Finley grins at Tanner, who chuckles.

devotiontourgraphic1Thanks again to Andrew for the time in the Land of Make Believe!

Each person who picks a question the boys answered and gives me the answer for them, is entered to win a copy of any of my previously published titles.

Be sure to follow the entire tour. There’ll be a scavenger hunt at the end for a chance at a $25 Amazon gift card! Keep up with the tour here:  http://www.grace-duncan.com/devotion-blog-tour

There is also a very special giveaway going on for Devotion. In the story, there are eight references to werewolf movies or movies with werewolves in them. DevotionFSFinley Cooper is tired of waiting for his destined mate to be ready to claim him. In deference to human laws, he’s already agreed to wait until he’s eighteen. But now his birthday has come and gone—and his mate has a new set of excuses. Finley doesn’t understand it any more than his wolf does, and he’s beginning to wonder if fate made a mistake.

Tanner Pearce wants nothing more than to claim his mate, but he worries that Finley is too young. Tanner will never forget what happened when his best friend mated at Finley’s age, only to have that mate end up feeling trapped and breaking their bond. While rare, it can happen, and the fallout Tanner witnessed as his best friend tried to deal with the break has haunted him for years.

When Finley finally has enough, he threatens to find someone who will claim him if Tanner doesn’t, and Tanner realizes he needs to come to terms with his fears or risk losing his mate forever.

Unbreak Broken Blog Tour—An Interview With J K Hogan and Giveaway

I’ve long been a fan of JK Hogan, and I’ve been stalking her Facebook page to see pictures of her son, so I was glad to be able to get the chance to interview her as part of her Unbreak Broken book tour. After you read the interview, make sure to enter the contest and check out the other blogs for more information about her and the Unbreak Broken.

An Interview with J K Hogan:

Welcome J. K. Since this is your first time on the blog, take a moment to tell everyone about who you are and what you write.

Thanks for having me, Andrew! I live in North Carolina with my husband, with whom I’ll be celebrating 10 years this year, and our son. Got one more on the way, too! I’ve been writing off and on for most of my life, but I’ve only been in publishing since 2012, and I’ve just released my 7th title. I’m a stay-at-home (work-at-home) mom, since I do both writing and freelance graphic design.

Your son is just a bit younger than my daughter. How do you find balancing writing and family?

I’m not gonna lie, it’s hard. I pretty much just have to adapt. I just have to squeeze in writing time whenever I can, because no day is ever the same. A sturdy laptop helps. LOL

It took some adjusting, because I was always one of those people who sort of needed to get in the right mindset to really get going. It’s been a lot harder recently since I’ve been pregnant. Makes my brain fuzzy. L

    What types of stories do you write? {This is mainly a genres question, but I left if vague so you can take it wherever you like.}

I’ve done a few different things over the last four years. I have an m/f paranormal romance series that was originally with a small publishing house, but I self-publish them now. They were pretty fun to write; they were about witches with a few shapeshifters thrown in.

With Wilde City Press, I have an m/m contemporary romance series, which Unbreak Broken is a part of, and a romantic (slightly paranormal) suspense novel that will eventually become a series.

Before we talk about your newest release, Unbreak Broken, what was the first book you had published?

My first book was Fire on the Island, the first in that m/f paranormal series.

How has your writing changed since then?

I’d like to say my writing has matured a lot. I try to put more into planning (I plotted “Fire” out loud to my husband over a 2 hour dinner and that was the extent of it), but I’m more of a pantser. I’ve learned a lot from my editors along the way, so I try to pay more attention to the technical stuff as I go. Mainly I’ve stopped worrying about what I should or shouldn’t write. I write what pops into my head, make sure it’s the best I can make it, and then it’s up to the publisher whether they’re interested or not.

Unbreak Broken, is the third book in your Coming About series. Let start with the series; what’s the common theme?

The common theme is the main characters affecting a change in their lives to become their true selves. They’ve all got baggage in their pasts and things they’re hiding, so the stories are about bringing all that to light and becoming comfortable with themselves as they are.

Tell us about book three, Unbreak Broken.

Unbreak Broken is mainly Rory’s story. His wedding—to a woman—is what started the series and brought all the characters together. But he’s been hiding some pretty big secrets all along.

Introduce us to your main characters, Rory and Bennett.

Rory is a big teddy bear of a guy who teaches photography to high school kids, including Bennett’s daughter. Bennett is a harbor patrol officer who loves nothing more than being out on the water—except his best friend Jessie and their daughter Addison.

As a gay man raising a daughter, my ears (or eyes) always perk up when I see that as part of the plot. What inspired you to write this story?

Well, all along, I had to find someone for Rory. He’s a big dude, but kind of cuddly, and he has this secret desire to be taken care of. He really wants someone to make him feel safe and… small, I guess. Once I started writing Bennett, giving him a daughter was initially a way to get him and Rory in the same room a couple of times, but Addison took on a life all her own. I wanted to convey that there are so many types and configurations of families, you can never assume anything.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

There is a side plot about teen bullying. It’s not really depicted in the book, in case that’s a trigger for some, but we have some teens dealing with the aftermath. I was given permission to use Paul Richmond’s You Will Rise Project as an outlet for the kids to talk about bullying and self-expression.

Will there be another book(s) in the Coming About series?

I honestly don’t know. I’d always intended to end it with Rory, and no one is begging me  for a story right at the moment, but who knows?

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

I’m working on a standalone, kind of a dark romance, about two men who meet in a mental institution—I know, but I promise the circumstances aren’t as creepy as you might imagine. That should be wrapped up soon, and I’ll start working on the sequel to my thriller, Shadows Fall.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Oh gosh, there are so many choices. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a lot of my favorite writers. I’ll go back to my roots then and say Michael Crichton or Peter Benchley. I cut my teeth on books like Congo and Jaws.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

Most of my free time is taken up by my son, and I love spending time with him. I also enjoy doing outdoor things when I can, like camping, hiking, rafting, or skiing. J

The last question is all yours. Tell the readers anything you like about you, your works, things you like. Anything at all.

All I can really say is thank you for all the support. The wonder of having people choose to read my books really never wears off. Every time someone seeks me out to tell me how much they liked one of my stories is just icing on the cake. I write for myself but I write for you guys too!

Also, one more thing… I chose not to include an epilogue with this story, because it just felt so final when I finished that last chapter. But I know that people wonder what happens to the characters after “the end.” So I’ve decided to write a follow-up short to be available on my website. Look for it sometime shortly after GRL (October 14-18) if you’re interested in more Rory & Bennett, plus Jessie, Addison, and the rest of the Coming About gang!

    Blurb:

    UnbreakBroken_Final

Rory Donovan’s life is a hot mess. His marriage is failing and he’s in intensive psychotherapy, working through the unfortunate side effects of memories from a childhood trauma. The only thing good in his life right now is his job—teaching photography to gifted high school students.

Harbor Patrol officer Bennett Foster is co-parenting his teenage daughter with his high school best friend Jessie. When he meets Addison’s teacher and realizes they’ve met before, he can’t get the sexy stranger out of his head.

Striking up a sexual-tension-filled friendship, together they must help an angsty teenager deal with a dying friend. Bennett must keep his little family from falling apart while Rory struggles to come to terms with his new reality. Somewhere along the way, most unexpectedly…love happens.

(True series: Should be read in order)

    Excerpt:

Dr. Conlan treated me to a rare fond smile, almost motherly in its warmth. “I’m pleased to see you happier than you have been.”

I grinned back, but then my brow furrowed. “Does this make me gay?”

    “Does that matter?”

    “I don’t know. Should it?”

“I’ll never understand the fascination with labeling things that our society seems to have. To me, sexuality is as intangible as the universe. There’s no way to truly know what’s out there, and how it all relates to everything else.

“As humans, we seek to know, to understand, and somehow we feel that putting things in boxes and labeling helps us do that. But some things are fluid, changing and developing with the tide of the evolution of life. Do me a favor, Rory. Don’t put yourself in a box.”

I was dumbfounded, stunned speechless. I knew I’d remember Dr. Conlan’s words for the rest of my life, and I would try to stay as true to them as I could. “I won’t,” I whispered.

Hostage Blog Tour—An Interview With Cheryl Headford & Giveaway

When I heard that Cheryl had rewritten Hostage and it was being published by Harmony Ink, I was doing a great big happy dance. If you’ve never read any of her books, you really should. I’ve been a fan since I read the original Hostage on the Gay Author’s website. (That version is long gone.) But I was thrilled to be able to host Cheryl for the start of her blog tour.

    An Interview with Cheryl Headford

Welcome back Cheryl! Since it’s has been a while since you’ve been here, remind people about who you are and what your write.

I’m a seriously crazy vampire goddess, doing her best to bring up her disabled son on her own while subjected to the pitiless rule of three cats and a dopey dog.

I’m also a writer of gay books. My alter ego Nephy Hart writes books for grown ups while I write for not quite grown ups.

We first met on the Gay Authors website. How has GA affected your writing career?

GA is directly responsible for my writing career. Without GA and the wonderful people I met there, including you, I would never have had the confidence to submit a work for publication. Therefore everything that’s happened since GA was your fault.

I’ve read most of your books, before we talk Hostage, tell us about some of your other works.

Where do I start? Everyone knows my favourite is Enigma, because I’m so totally in love with the MC Silver. Unfortunately that one’s down at the moment for polishing although it will be back on sale with a brand new cover very soon.

After Enigma, though, I think my favourites are The Runaway, which is a Nephylim adult book, The Face in the Window, which is my Young Adult, and Ari which is my most recent release, which is NA.

The three books couldn’t be more different.

The Runaway is about a young man called Jack, who is living with his aunt in a cabin by the wood recovering from a car accident in which he lost his memory and his parents. He meets the enigmatic Cierrai on the banks of the lake. Cierrai confuses Jack. He’s so androgynous that Jack has trouble remembering he’s a man sometimes. That’s why he’s so attracted to him, especially when he’s wearing those suspenders and that little leather skirt.

As they grow closer Jack’s memories return and he realized it’s not Ciarrai’s feminine side that attracts him and they embark on a passionate affair. But Ciarria’s hiding a secret and when his past catches up with him Jack has to fight through an overwhelming sense of betrayal to find Ciarrai and hold on to him.

The Face in the Window is a YA about a young man called Haze who is struggling with a terrible thing that happened in his past. He thinks he’s put it all behind him, but then he meets Ace, a stunning blind, albino boy whose family vary from over protective to downright abusive.

As they grow closer and Haze comes to realize what a truly remarkable boy Ace really is, the abuse he suffers at the hands of his brother enrages Haze and brings the irrational, uncontrollable rage he experienced after the trauma of his past to the surface and when he accidentally hurts Ace he runs away from everything.

Fortunately, he can’t run away from Ace, who might be blind but is certainly not stupid or un–resourceful. With Ace at his side, Haze faces up to what happening in the past and is able to move on with a better insight and a beautiful new boyfriend to remind him every day of how precious life is and how much someone can achieve be with the right person at his side

As for Ari, I’ll speak more about him later.

Some of your work is YA/NA, other stories are very much adult. How do you keep the voices of the characters age appropriate?

That’s why I have two personas. Nephy Hart lets it all out and her characters do whatever the hell they want.

Cheryl has to rein hers in a lot more. As any parent will know, teenagers are horny little bastards. All they think about is sex and I have to keep diverting them. Having a fourteen year old son doesn’t really help because he wants sex as much as the characters do. He tells everyone I write gay porn and wants all the gory details. Even when my characters stop he fills in the details to the point I have to hit him with a cushion to shut him up.

He is useful with ‘voice’ though. He corrects dialogue with, ‘no way would a kid say that’, or ‘Mam, that’s really lame’, and gives me his unique perspective – when he can be arsed.

One of your most recent releases – Ari – has a transgendered main character. Talk about that character and the book itself.

Ari is NA. It begins at a writers meet where two young men, Ari and Benji meet and experience an immediate attraction. All is not quite as it seems though. Although Benji makes no secret of the fact he’s transgender, Ari is not quite as forthcoming about the fact he’s intersex.

Right from the start, they experience bumps in the road, and they only get worse when they go home.

Benji meets Ari’s family, two strong and determined pagan women and is introduced to Ari’s wonderfully supportive home environment, being included in their celebration at the tiny stone circle and experiencing the beginnings of the healing that repairs his own family relationships.

When Ari is seriously injured in an accident that might not have been an accident, Benji rushes to his side and both families struggle with the possibility of a future without Ari, or with an Ari so changed he might as well be a different person.

The story is about labels, about two young men fighting to be recognized as who and what they are, and about a love that can transcend everything and keep you going even when the odds seem hopeless

    Amazon

    Wayward Ink

Let’s talk Hostage. What is this about?

Hostage is about two princes who go on a grand adventure. At the beginning Astrin Raphael is the hostage of House Gabriel, at a time when the two Houses of Raphael and Gabriel have been at war for almost 20 years. His freedom is the price of peace.

Rowan Gabriel hates him for the death of his parents in a Raphael raid fifteen years ago. The hatred makes him treat Astrin very badly to begin with.

When Astrin’s father and Rowan’s uncle are kidnapped they work together on a reckless, insane adventure into the heart of enemy territory to rescue them. Along the way Rowan’s hatred gives way to an altogether different feeling that it takes him some time to recognize. It takes Astrin a lot longer and by the time he realizes how he feels for Rowan it’s almost too late.

I love that the “Great Houses” are all named after archangels even though this is not set on Earth. Where did you get the inspiration for this story?

I have absolutely no idea! I set out wanting to write something a bit different. It was to be an adventure for teenagers, and that’s all I knew. The spark of inspiration came from a dream, pretty much the same one Rowan was plagued with, although it was nothing like as traumatic for me. It was vivid though. The editor commented that the description was a little too clear; too graphic, but I wrote what I saw, and fortunately she kept it in as it was.

Is the setting somewhere other than Earth? Maybe. It could also be Earth sometime in the future. It was definitely grounded very much in Earthlike landscapes and peoples. In some ways the things the boys get up to are very ordinary; camping out in the back of a car, riding a crowded, dirty train, getting drunk in a dive and staggering back to the pub where they’re staying and waking the landlady.

The descriptions of scenery and settings are all based on photographs or personal knowledge of real places, so I don’t know. Maybe it was Earth, maybe just somewhere which evolved a little different. Angels get everywhere, you know.

Introduce us to your main characters, Rowan and Astrin.

Rowan and Astrin are crown princes of Houses Gabriel and Raphael, two of the four ruling Houses of the world in which the story is set. House Gabriel is in the north and House Raphael in the West. The other two Houses are House Michael in the South and House Uriel in the East.

Rowan is nineteen years old. He’s tall, dark and brooding with an impulsive streak and a fiery temper and an inability to let go of anger. He hates Astrin for the death of his parents in a House Raphael raid gone wrong, even though Astrin was a baby at the time.

Astrin is seventeen and couldn’t be more different. He’s slender and fair with pale blonde hair and green eyes. He seems fragile but most certainly isn’t and proves to be by far the most resourceful of the two on their journey. He’s stable, level headed and worldly wise, and he gets them out of trouble over and over again.

I read the original version (and this one too now). What’s different about this version?

It’s much better edited and has been made safer for younger audiences (ie I’ve nixed the sex) It was probably more interesting before, but it’s much smoother and cleaner (in many senses of the word) now.

Will there be more adventures in this world and/or with these characters?

Nope. I very rarely write sequels and this story is complete. I have too many other things going on to come back to this one. Although, I have learned never to say never.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

Astrin and Rowan can communicate telepathically. Rowan’s mind looks like a blazing sun while Astrin’s is a spun silver web dusted with diamond–like stars.

Also, a journey across the desert on a camel does not end well for Astrin.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

As usual, I’m working on a few at the same time. I’ve just finished the first of a two–parter about a boy who starts off with no memories of his life before age ten, when he ran away and ended up on the streets. Now aged seventeen and finally in a settled foster home he is struggling to come to terms with horrendous panic attacks which stem from what happened to him during the period of time he doesn’t remember.

He meets another young man with a dark past and become more and more drawn to each other. When his memories finally return the true horror of what he witnessed so many years ago hits him like a sledgehammer and has rebounding effects on everyone around him

I’ve started on the second book where the two boys fight social services and the law to go back to the place where the events took place and confront a murderer who sees them as loose ends.

At the same time I’m working on a story about a man who has a severe speech impediment and a father who considers him to be essentially worthless. Unable to speak, the only way he can manage his frustration and desperation is by visiting a BDSM club where he actively craves pain and humiliation.

Enter the new bouncer, who also happens to be a new employee at Daddy’s firm and we get an interesting pairing indeed. I’ve only just started and already sparks are flying all over the place.

I’m also well into a story about shifters that is taking some strange twists and turns. A rat who turns out to be an angel, a snake who’s actually a flying serpent and a dragon who may have been responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs and knows a dark secret about Saint George and a whole family of vampires including Dracula and Elizabeth Bathory.

I have a new YA book out with Wayward Ink soon which has one of the most adorable characters I’ve ever written. Watch out for Dory!!

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Terry Pratchett. He had the most amazing mind. The Discworld books are absolute treasures, with so many layers you could read the same book ten times and find new things. The breadth of his knowledge and wisdom is truly astonishing, from quantum physics, to herbalism and witchcraft, to literature and the true nature of stories.

I would love to sit down with him over a pint and talk about Granny Weatherwax, wizards, elves and orangutans.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

Is there anything besides reading and writing? I like playing computer games and watching films. I don’t paint as often as I used to and probably should. At the moment. I’m obsessed with hidden object and puzzle games.

Over the summer I was reminded how much I enjoy visiting museums and taking boat trips on rivers. I think we might be doing a lot more of that.

The last question is all yours. Tell the readers anything you like about you, your works, things you like. Anything at all.

This is the most difficult question of all. How do I write anything at all? I’m a total procrastinator and can’t make a decision to save my life. What to say? What to say?

Okay, maybe I’ll talk about something that’s important to me. I write quite a bit about disabilities that aren’t immediately obvious, and in many ways these are the most difficult disabilities to have.

My son is autistic. He’s high functioning and very intelligent but his autism and its accompanying depression and anxiety are disabilities nevertheless.

My son is ‘strange’. He’s ‘different’. Many people might see him as rude, or cold, or antagonistic, but it’s just his way. He’ll always tell the literal truth, and has difficulties in distinguishing when this is appropriate and when it isn’t. He can’t bear it when people are wrong and is compelled to point out their errors no matter what, even when they’re strangers. He’ll get up and walk away from a conversation, or take out his tablet in the middle of dinner, but it’s not because he’s being rude, it’s because he can’t handle the stimuli and needs to shut it out for a while.

My sweet, gentle son can’t handle aggression or violence of any kind. Arguments confuse and upset him, and raised voices send him into almost a fugue state of panic. He finds it very difficult to cope with the world, although he’s getting better as he gets older.

People like my son are invisible. They’re the people who take forever getting things absolutely right. They’re the ones who hold up the queue because they’re challenging the cashier with something that is objectively totally unimportant. They’re the ones who mumble to themselves in the street and count the paving stones, because that helps them focus on something to stop the overwhelming rush of stimli from the number of people and level of noise.

The moral of this tale is that we all make assumptions, and sometimes we don’t have all the information to make correct ones. The next time you see a child acting out, they might not be naughty, they might be autistic. The next time you see a teenager at the dinner table ignoring everyone to play a video game, they might not be rude, they might just need to shut it all out for a while. The next time you’re talking to someone and they laugh at inappropriate moments, or just walk away in the middle of an argument, they might not be rude or stupid or any of the other negative stereotyping we apply, they might just need space.

Treat everyone with respect even if you don’t understand why they do the things they do. It might be because they’re struggling just to live in the world we take for granted. Also be aware that many people, especially autistic people don’t like to be touched or directly challenged, and they can’t make decisions easily.

Okay I’ll shut up now, before you really regret you asked that question.

Thank you for having me on your blog. All the best with your new release, which is out soon right?

Thanks so much, Cheryl for being my guest today!

Blurb: Astrin Raphael wakes up in a strange place, frightened and confused. He is told to trust someone who seems to hate him, and he tries—he really tries. However, things change rapidly when he discovers his friend is actually his archenemy, Rowan Gabriel, whose abusive behavior stems from a deeply ingrained, if unwarranted, hatred over something that happened many years before, and simply wasn’t Astrin’s fault.

When Rowan’s uncle and Astrin’s father are kidnapped by Strebo Michael, the two crown princes are catapulted into an adventure that forces them to work together, and along the way their feelings for each other grow. Rowan is quick to let his hate go, but Astrin can’t release his inhibitions. It takes Astrin almost dying from a poisoned dagger before he finally accepts Rowan’s love.

When they return home, their problems continue as their Houses try to negotiate a way for the young men to be together. It soon becomes clear at least one of them will need to relinquish his throne.

    Excerpt

ROWAN WASN’T smiling. He was simmering gently and muttering to himself under his breath. He’d understood and fully appreciated everything his uncle said to him, but it changed nothing. He hated Astrin Raphael, hated him with a vengeance—vengeance for his parents, to be exact. When Astrin’s father had given the order to attack the armored convoy carrying Rowan’s parents back to the capital, he had shattered Rowan’s world. At four years old, the young prince had hardly known his parents, but he could remember the soft touch of his mother’s lips on his hair, the strong arms of his father cradling him and making him feel safer than he ever had since.

That was all gone now, wiped out in one round of intensive fire and a couple of old-fashioned rocket grenades. Gritting his teeth, Rowan pressed his thumb against a panel that checked his DNA. As Crown Prince, there was no security level for which he was not cleared, and almost instantly the panel changed from red to green, letting out a soft hiss as the seal around the door released.

Quite apart from his feelings for Astrin, Rowan hated coming to the infirmary wing. It was thankfully small, as it catered only for those who lived and worked in the Palace Complex. The door opened into a central lobby from which other doors led in three different directions. One led to the administrative center, another to the main body of the hospital, which was more often accessed through the main entrance at the other side of the building, and the third to the private royal apartment. This was used and accessed only by members of the royal family, their personal physicians, and retainers.

As usual a senior administrator sat behind the desk, working before a bank of computers. Because of the unusual circumstances, soldiers stood on either side of the door into the royal suite. They were elite bodyguards, eternally alert and ready to act in a heartbeat should the need arise.

Nodding to the soldiers but ignoring the administrator, Rowan again pressed his thumb against a panel and was admitted to a dimly lit corridor.

At the end of the corridor was an administration chamber similar to the one he’d just left. This was manned predominantly by nurses, as it dealt with only a fraction of the information handled by the mainframe.

Today there were three nurses at the station. One was working hard on a keyboard in front of the monitor screens, apparently updating paperwork.

The other two nurses were lounging. They snapped to attention as Rowan entered. He ignored them.

Crossing the floor, he activated another thumb pad and pushed the door open when it hissed.

His first thoughts when he passed through the door were of utter contempt and disgust. If he hadn’t retained some sense of honor and decency, he would have spat on the sleeping prince. Fortunately, despite his complaints to his uncle, he realized it was necessary to treat the other prince with a degree of respect. It was vital the negotiations with his father were a success. Rowan therefore swallowed his feelings and went to work.

The boy was unconscious and completely helpless. As a Class One Prisoner, it was too dangerous to allow him any kind of freedom, even the freedom of consciousness.

For normal Class One Prisoners the overcrowded prisons had, over the years, developed containment chambers. Here, many men and women could be economically housed in pods, kept in a comatose state for however long their sentence might be, constantly played audio messages designed to precipitate rehabilitation. They were roused from their coma only during the last months of their sentence, when they had regular consultations with clinical therapists who assessed whether their minds had developed sufficient conscience to allow them to be released back into society.

Some prisoners had committed crimes so severe it was unlikely they would ever be roused. Their pods occupied a room all of their own, which was entered only to install a new pod or to remove that of a prisoner who had died.

However, no one was going to put Astrin, Crown Prince of House Raphael and The Western Kingdoms, in a stasis pod. Although he was a prisoner, he was still a member of the royal family of a major ruling House, and therefore deserving of special treatment.

Instead of a pod, he was reclining on a state-of-the-art bed, his head and shoulders propped up on white pillows. Although it was not possible to see from casual examination, his body was suspended from the shoulders down within an electrically generated field. No part of it was touching either the bed or the covering sheets, thereby preventing bed sores. In addition the field provided constant deep stimulation to his muscles, preventing atrophy and circulation issues.

Tubes inserted into the veins in his arms fed him a regular mixture of drugs, which maintained his perpetual coma, and another tube inserted into his stomach through his abdomen was used to feed him daily with a concentrated, thick liquid that contained all the nutrients needed to keep him alive.

It was Rowan’s duty to feed the sleeping prince, then disengage the force field and wash his body, making sure he stayed clean and there was no infection or irritation of the skin. Rowan hated it. He hated Astrin, and touching him repulsed him. Also the mixture of sedative drugs and the soupy liquid diet produced an absolutely foul waste that made him ponder at times whether it was deliberately engineered by his uncle as a rather basic lesson in humility.

It never occurred to Rowan that, if he found the whole thing demeaning and sickening, had Astrin been conscious enough to be aware of what was happening to his body, he would, no doubt, have found it even more so.

    AboutTheAuthor

Cheryl Headford was born into a poor mining family in the South Wales Valleys. Until she was sixteen, the toilet was at the bottom of the garden and the bath hung on the wall. Her refrigerator was a stone slab in the pantry, and there was a black lead fireplace in the kitchen. They look lovely in a museum but aren’t so much fun to clean.

Cheryl has always been a storyteller. As a child, she’d make up stories for her nieces, nephews, and cousin, and they’d explore the imaginary worlds she created, in play.

Later in life, Cheryl became the storyteller for a reenactment group who traveled widely, giving a taste of life in the Iron Age. As well as having an opportunity to run around hitting people with a sword, she had an opportunity to tell stories of all kinds, sometimes of her own making, to all kinds of people. The criticism was sometimes harsh, especially from the children, but the reward enormous.

It was there she began to appreciate the power of stories and the primal need to hear them. In ancient times, the wandering bard was the only source of news and the storyteller the heart of the village, keeping the lore and the magic alive. Although much of the magic has been lost, the stories still provide a link to the part of us that wants to believe that it’s still there, somewhere.

In present times, Cheryl lives in a terraced house in the Valleys with her son, dog, hamster, and two cats. Her daughter has deserted her for the big city, but they’re still close. She’s never been happier since she was made redundant and is able to devote herself entirely to her twin loves of writing and art.

    Blurb:

FirstFSIt’s taken Tommy Newsome a while to get his head around being gay.

Growing up in a small town in Georgia, hasn’t prepared him for the more liberal life of a student at the university in Athens. Add to that the teachings of his parents and his church, and you have one shy young man who feels out of his depth. Working on his daddy’s farm hasn’t given him any chance of a social life, certainly not one like the clubs of Atlanta have on offer. Not that Tommy feels comfortable when he gets to sample it—Momma’s lectures still ring loudly inside his head.

All that changes when he goes to his first gay bar and sets eyes on Mike Scott.

When Mike’s not behind the bar at Woofs, he’s busy with his life as adult entertainer Scott Masters. Twenty years in the industry and the times, they are a-changing. Mike’s not had much luck in the relationship department, but as his mom is fond of telling him, you keep fishing in the same pond, you’re gonna reel in the same kind of fish. Maybe it’s time for a change.

And then a beautiful young man asks Mike to be his first….

“I see your stalker’s here again.”

“Huh?” Mike frowned. “What are you talking about now, Kev?” He concentrated on the drink order for Dave and his friends over in the corner.

Kevin grinned and flicked his head toward the rear of the bar. “You know exactly who I’m talking ’bout. Mr. Cutie Pie over there with the muscles. Y’know, the one who’s been sitting on that barstool every Saturday night for the last five weeks?” He arched his eyebrows. “Don’t give me that ‘butter wouldn’t melt’ act. I seen you looking.” His grin widened. “G’on, tell me I’m wrong.”

Mike wasn’t about to give him the satisfaction. “You’re wrong,” he stated emphatically.

Kevin stared. “Hell, you’re a poor liar.” Then his eyes gleamed. “In that case, you can take him his burger, tater tots, and Cherry Coke. Maybe you could even get him to say a few words beyond ‘Hey.’ ’Cause I swear that’s all I’ve ever heard out of that pretty little mouth of his.”

Mike snickered. “I think if I spoke to him, he’d piss his pants.”

Kevin guffawed and went off to the back of the bar. Inside Mike was cursing himself. He’d been careful not to glance too openly at the guy. Those queens he worked with were too damn good at spotting when one of them was taking an interest in a customer. And fuck it, he was interested in the painfully shy but so sexy young man who hadn’t said a word.

“And then there’s the fact that every time he comes in here,” Kevin continued, appearing beside him as if there hadn’t been a break in conversation, “I watch him look ’round the bar ’til he sees you.” That grin was still in place.

“Are you still going on about him?” Mike demanded. “Sure you’re not the one here who’s fixating?”

Kevin held up his hands. “I just call it like I see it. I think he’s only here to ogle you.”

“Well, he’s gonna be disappointed if he turns up in a couple week’s time, isn’t he, ’cause I won’t be here.”

Kevin’s brow furrowed. “Since when do you not work on weekends?”

“Since I’ll be in LA, that’s when.” Mike returned his grin. “Remember?”

“Oh, yeah, you’ve got a shoot. I’d clean forgotten.” He faked a sad face. “Aw, how you gonna cope without seeing that gorgeous bod?” He leered. “Then again, don’t worry your head about it. I’m sure me or Patrick can take care of him.” He waggled his eyebrows.

Mike groaned. “For fuck’s sake, just leave the kid alone, okay? He’s not hurting anyone.” Mike had seen enough to know the guy wasn’t going to be a problem. He preferred this quiet observation to the occasional gropings of fans when he made appearances at Hustlaball or Southern Decadence. The kid appeared to have good manners.

“Here’s his order.” Kevin handed him the tray containing the Angus burger, tater tots, and Cherry Coke. “I’m sure he’ll be delighted to get it from you.” That shit-eating grin just wouldn’t quit.

Mike shook his head and took the tray. He walked over to where the young guy sat, his eyes widening as Mike approached. “Here you go,” Mike said cheerfully, setting the food down in front of him.

The young guy blushed furiously. “Th-thanks.” He lowered his gaze and commenced picking at his tots.

Mike retreated to a safe distance and watched him while he ate. He liked the look of those wide shoulders, the reddish-brown hair, not too short, the barest hint of scruff on his jawline and those striking green eyes. His skin was creamy where it showed, which spoke of a lot of time spent covered up. With his coloring, that was understandable. But that body was speaking even louder to Mike’s dick, which was definitely interested, judging by the way it filled as he feasted on the delectable view before him.

His attention was forcibly drawn away when someone pinched his ass, good and hard.

    “You are so busted.”

    Fucking Kevin.

    About the Authors:

Born and raised in the north-west of England,  always loved writing. Words were important. Full stop. However, when childhood gave way to adulthood, the writing ceased, as life got in the way. K.C. discovered erotic fiction in 2009, when the purchase of a ménage storyline led to the startling discovery that reading about men in love was damn hot. In 2012, arriving at a really low point in life led to the desperate need to do something creative. An even bigger discovery waited in the wings—writing about men in love was even hotter….

K.C. now writes full-time and is loving every minute of her new career. The laptop still has no idea of what hit it… it only knows that it wants a rest, please. And it now has to get used to the idea that where K.C goes, it goes.

And as for those men in love that she writes about? The list of stories just waiting to be written is getting longer… and longer….

Lovers, Losers and You—Blog Tour and Giveaway—An Interview With Skylar M. Cates.

Many years ago (okay so like two and a half, but it seems longer) I ‘met’ Skylar Cates—on line.  This year I got to meet her in person, not once, but twice. When I got the chance to join her current blog tour, I knew I wanted to interview her again. So, with that, take a few moments to read the interview, check out the new book (and hopefully go buy it) and then enter the giveaway.

An Interview With Skylar M. Cates.

Welcome back Skylar. Since it’s been a couple years since you were last here, remind people about yourself and tell us anything new.

Hello! Thank you for having me back. I write contemporary MM for Dreamspinner. I have two series and a few standalone books.

Your first book, Exposed was released in 2013. How many books have you written since then?

Wow. I never actually added this up before, but I’m proud to say nine books and counting.

Last year you finished the third book in the ‘Guy’ Series. Any plans for addition books in the series?

I’m delighted you asked this. Yes, A Guy’s Thanksgiving will be released this November from Dreamspinner. It’s the final book. All of the previous couples are there. The book is a holiday one, and it seems like a wonderful place to end their journey.

Your books to date are almost exclusively contemporary MM romance. Any intention to move into any other genres?

I have notes for books in other genres. The one that might actually see the light of day is a MM shifter book. I never thought I’d do a werewolf story, but I originally answered an anthology call for it and decided it was truly a full length piece.

This year you started the ‘Sunshine and Happiness’ series. What inspired this series?

The first book in the series, Here for You, was inspired by two things:

I had the desire to write about a group of guys sharing a house in South Florida. I love exploring friendships.

The other inspiration is a friend of mine who was training for an Aids Ride on his bike, and he was a victim of an awful hit and run. He recovered, but his life was forever altered by the event.

Let’s talk Lovers, Losers, and You, book two in the series. Tell us about that.

I wanted a novel that explored how a couple manages a long distance problem. How do you know when the distance is worth bridging? What are you willing to sacrifice to be with that person?

That was the overall theme that began the book. It’s also about friendships and family.

Tell us a bit about your main characters, Own and Andrew.

Although Owen is from a loving family, he’s adopted, and his looks and interests are different. He struggles, as many of us do, to figure out who he is. Owen’s a history teacher whose own history is vague. When he learns about his biological brother Brendan, he feels compelled to get some answers. He’s a little shy.

Andrew is strong-willed and determined. He’s tired of being that nice guy who finishes last. He wants to go after his dreams for the café that he owns. He’s no time for dating.

What part of the book was the most fun to write and why?

    The End.

Because you did it. You didn’t give up. LOL!

I actually enjoy the first few chapters too. I get involved with the rhythm of the book then, and I begin to hear the character’s voice come out. It’s fun.

What part made you struggle the most?

Definitely the middle is toughest for me. It’s a jigsaw puzzle where the frame is easy, but those middle pieces can be tricky.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

Owen has a special needs sister, loosely inspired by my real life stepbrother.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

The third in this series for Tomas and Marc. I’m also working on the kinky werewolf story I mentioned, and I’m kicking around a joint novel with the fabulous Cate Ashwood.

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

I did enjoy Orphan Train and Luna lately. But I read anything and everything!

My main concern is that readers often feel ashamed in what they choose to read, especially from folks who never even picked up a romance novel. I say to hell with that!

Reading is a great freedom, and I think there should never be a stigma attached to it.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

I once met Adrienne Rich, who was my poetry idol, at a conference. But I was too afraid to approach her directly. Gah! I regret that and wish I could have another opportunity to chat with her.

The other authors are all people from my childhood. The authors who made me pant and tremble and yearn for more, more, more!

I think those early reading experiences stay with us, you know?

I’d love the chance to meet childhood influences like Shel Silverstein, Edgar Alan Poe, S.E. Hinton, and Judy Blume.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

I enjoy my family time. We recently went zip-lining and it was a lot of fun. Okay, I was terrified. My kids went upside-down like little daredevils while I had my eyes shut most of the time, but we had a blast. No regrets. I would go again and actually keep my eyes open. If I could, I’d do an activity like that every month with my children.

I rescued a dog this summer too. I love animals.

Besides family time and animals, I enjoy swimming, movies, and eating ethnic foods….Hmmm, I suddenly feel as if I am applying for an online dating application. Yikes! I’ll stop here.

    Thank you for hosting me!

    Excerpt

IT HAD been Owen’s idea to ask for his contract a week early. St. James Academy usually delivered them in the faculty mailboxes a day before spring break, but he had been eager to see if he would be offered an increase in salary. The students had voted him teacher of the year, and Owen had single-handedly slaved over the new schedule that would rotate their classes more like a college and create a more flexible day for students and faculty alike. Everybody had been excited and full of praise for his suggestions. It wasn’t mere ego to think he’d earned the 5 percent that more experienced faculty received. Owen tore open the manila envelope and quickly scanned its contents, his heart thumping hopefully.

Instead of an increase, though, he found something else entirely.

    A morality clause.

Owen had spent years telling himself all of it mattered: awards, student reviews, hard work. But did any of it? Because more often than not in this world, one misstep resulted in wiping out all the rest of the path.

    Son of a bitch.

Now he was blindly heading down the highway in his beat-up Honda, and Owen had the words playing over and over in his head as he drove to the outskirts of the small coastal town of Ocean Vista, Florida. He pulled off to the side of the road to think. Ahead of him was the town and behind him the highway. The day was without the mercy of the slightest breeze, and Owen felt a hot trickle of sweat at his neck.

He’d come to learn about his biological brother’s life. Each time his brother’s best friend Cole wrote to him, it had torn at Owen’s heart until he finally couldn’t ignore the need to visit. If he’d also come to avoid possible threats to his career as a teacher and hide out in a place where nobody knew him or expected anything from him—well, that was a fact he could keep to himself.

His stomach growled. First things first. He needed a good meal. Owen was normally of solid build, but he’d lost some weight. Bone-tired most nights, it was too much bother to cook. If his mama knew how he’d let things slide with his meals, she’d be all over his ass. Cooking good food and teaching manners were the cornerstones of his mama’s parenting skills.

His mama could also pack a suitcase like nobody’s business, having followed Daddy’s career from one place to another. She folded with military precision. Not so Owen, who haphazardly tossed in three pairs of khaki shorts, one pair of jeans, and some random polo shirts. He packed white socks, sensible underwear, and toiletries. At the last possible second he remembered a nicer outfit and a bathing suit, but he had little occasion for other clothes beyond school functions.

Owen gave all of himself to his job at St. James Academy. Hell, he lived at his job. The private school encouraged the faculty to use their tiny campus apartments or be in their dorms as a “parent.” He’d had a plan, mapping out his entire future. He was going to be head of the history department, then assistant headmaster. He’d move into the headmaster’s big sprawling house by the lake one day. Nothing had changed. Only….

Faculty could be dismissed for any reason deemed “immoral” or “unacceptable” behavior not reflecting the values of the school. Private schools sometimes did this, but this was new for St. James Academy. A pushy member of the board of trustees, Mrs. Wilma Temple, or “Mrs. Moneybags,” as the staff secretly referred to her, insisted on it. “The world is more and more filled with degenerates,” she warned as she pointed a bony finger. “We all need to protect the St. James Academy proper way of life.”

Although nobody defined the morality clause to specifically include sexual behavior, Owen could easily imagine their reaction to his arriving with a boyfriend for a student basketball game or theater performance, or even a faculty Christmas party. They’d say he was “flaunting his lifestyle” and “endangering the minds of impressionable, minor youths.” Since this was a private school, not a public one, there was nothing protecting Owen’s job.

He’d been sick when he’d gone back to his small apartment.

Not that Owen had a boyfriend to bring to a school event. He’d been alone and dateless for a long time, at least six months. His family complained good-naturedly that Owen did not make enough time for a proper social life, so busy was he with his lesson plans and textbooks.

For that reason, it had been easy not to share his personal life with his coworkers. He just couldn’t bring himself to sign a contract vowing to uphold Mrs. Temple’s idea of how he should live his life, but neither had he marched into the headmaster’s office and torn it up. He had until vacation ended to decide what to do.

Owen did not want to stay where his behavior would be so monitored and weighed. No, thank you. The ballsy thing to do would be to leave. To be brave like his parents. Like his sister was every day. But it wasn’t as simple for him as that.

St. James Academy was his lifeline. Owen had gone there as a student since sixth grade, when his family moved to the Buckhead area, when he’d craved stability desperately, and he’d thrived there. Owen’s mama, a successful television reporter, and his daddy, the ex-jock who now owned one of the largest sporting goods stores in Georgia, allowed their geeky, dreamy boy to attend St. James, even though they had reservations, but Owen had loved St. James Academy from the first. He loved the big brick buildings and the shade of the dogwood trees, could sit for hours in the immaculate gardens filled with fragrant jasmine and azaleas. He could spend every day with a good book and be perfectly happy. His favorite part of the day had been discussing battle strategies with old Mr. Hewitt, the very history teacher whom Owen had replaced a year or two ago.

Mr. Hewitt—cranky, heavyset, food in his beard—had been the most amazing teacher Owen ever met. He made history come alive. Owen wished for even half his success in the classroom. In those days the school motto was Honor Above Everything. What would it be now? Be Careful, I’m Watching You?

Owen sighed to himself as he drove through the little South Florida town. He’d have to sign the contract and make the best of it. All he’d ever wanted was to be needed by somebody, and his students needed him. The school was his life. He’d have to hope he was never outed on the Internet or questioned too closely by Mrs. Temple. If he ever did find love, he’d have to hope the guy would be willing to spend most of their time in private places. It seemed like the best solution, the most logical one. The one that would keep all his planning on track.

So why did he feel like such garbage?

He needed this temporary change of scenery. Ocean Vista was tiny, but it had a long main street filled with cutesy shops and restaurants. Perfect. It was early morning, not many cars around, and Owen had no trouble parking. He headed toward the nearest place with a sign that promised a meal.

He took Dave’s green sweater from a hanger, slipped it around his back and hugged himself with the sleeves. The scent of Dave’s favorite aftershave filled his nostrils. My dear one, what will I ever do without you? He picked up the rose, stuck the stem through a buttonhole on his shirt and went into the kitchen. He took two glasses from the cupboard and pushed a button on the refrigerator door. Ice and green tea flavored with honey and ginseng poured into the glasses. He frowned at the glasses and set one on the table. I guess I only need one glass.

His shoulders drooped and his feet shuffled as he walked to the living room. He felt much older than his seventy-six years. He set the glass on the table next to his favorite chair, sat and pushed a button on the arm of his chair. Across the room a huge screen nearly the size of the wall rose up and displayed a menu. He pushed another button and an old-fashioned photograph appeared on the screen. Memories flooded his mind.

    About the Author:

    A. T. Weaver is the pen name of a divorced grandmother of eleven, great-grandmother of one. She lives with her cat, Cleopatra, in downtown Kansas City, MO.

When she was growing up, the word gay meant happy and carefree and homosexuals were called queer or ‘one-of-those’. However, she never heard those terms until she was married and a mother. When two men moved in down the street from their mobile home, her husband had to explain they were queer. As far as she was concerned, they were just a couple of men sharing a trailer.

In 2003, through a TV show called Boy Meets Boy, using the sign-on of ‘alixtheweaver’ she ‘met’ over 3,000 gay men in a Yahoo group. These men called her ‘grandma J. and educated her as to the inequalities suffered by the LGBT community She became a staunch ally. She visited one of the men in San Francisco who lived just up the street from the Castro. As he showed her around, they stopped in front of what was once Harvey Milk’s camera store. Her question, “Who was Harvey Milk?” started her education into Gay history.

After the passing of Prop 8 in 2008, she attended her first ever protest rally at the ripe age of 65 where she held a church flag across the street from WBC protesters.

    A. T.’s aim is to move you in some way. Whether you laugh or cry, love it or hate it, she welcomes all comments, whether good or bad.

  • A Summer (And Spring) in Pictures

So, yeah, I’ve been bad. No real picture update for months. (Some of you I’m sure are thing – thank the Lord!)  So these span Easter, Mother’s Day, the puppy’s birth, a slew of birthday parties, strawberry picking, a Father’s Day concert, baseball games (though I’m not sure ‘lil q knows they played a game, she goes for the eats and carousal rides), a summer of field trips, the first year of soccer and a few other odds and ends.  It also shows the progress of the puppies – Lindsey and Farrell (Mike named him for the main character in my Champion of the Gods series.) You think kids grow fast, fuhgeddataboutit. Dogs run laps around kids.

    Enjoy.

A Hard Day’s Night Blog Tour and Giveaway—An Interview With Mia Kerick

Today I’m excited to bring you an Interview with Mia Kerick. I’m a fan of her writing and a big fan of Mia as a person. She’s been an unabashed supporter for everyone’s rights and is using her platform as a best selling author to portray various gender situations in positive ways. So, please take a moment to read the interview and then enter the giveaway for a really cool and different prize.

    An Interview With Mia Kerick

Welcome Mia!  Since this the first time I’ve had a chance to interview you, tell readers about yourself.

Hi Andrew, and readers! I’m thrilled to be here today in promotion of my new release “A Hard Day’s Night”.  So, who am I? In a nutshell, I’m an at-home mom with an imagination that works overtime. My top priority is raising my four kids—from my oldest, a senior at Georgetown University, to my second, a dancer at SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance, to my third, a senior in high school, and finally, my youngest and only son, a sophomore in high school. And then there’s my husband. I’m not raising him, but I try to give him some attention, too. But my hobby and my career are one and the same; to write LGBTQ romance.

One more important Mia Kerick fact: I am a major proponent of size acceptance. My fear is that once we, as social activists, rid the world of most of the other stereotypes and prejudices and inequality, we will be left with one. It will be a judgment against fat people, because fat people supposedly brought the discrimination upon themselves through laziness, poor eating habits, and lack of self-discipline. I firmly believe that people come in all colors, sexualities, and sizes. I also want to widen the rigid notion of what is perceived as beautiful, especially in terms of size.

My first Mia Kerick book was, Beggars and Choosers—which I very much enjoyed. What was the first book you wrote?

Beggars and Choosers was actually the first book I wrote, Andrew. And it may have been published when I was in my late forties (age spoiler alert!) but I wrote it first when I was a teenager. All of the main characters were members of the band Queen, and I of course, was Cory, the character I most identified with. (I was a fan of big hair bands and rock opera.) In junior high and high school, I used to sit on my bed at night and write stories in spiral bound notebooks, and the storyline of Beggars and Choosers was the first I came up with and it stuck with me.

So how did it go from a M/F with a female lead character to an MM romance?

I never really thought about it that way, Andrew. One of the two main characters involved in the romance was me, and I’m female, but before I wrote the book I had been reading only MM romance and had been thinking a lot about the issue of gay marriage, and so my character became Cory, the boy, instead of Cory, who was me, the girl.

You’ve written books in a wide range of sub-genre’s. Talk about those for a minute.

I have written a wide array of romance dealing with the LGBTQ spectrum. My philosophy may seem simple—love is love—but to me this premise is indescribably important. I truly believe in the right to love who you want to love with no rules about who that person should be, unless it is hurting someone (by this I mean legal adults with legal adults or young adults with young adults). Before marital equality was law in this country, it bothered me to no end knowing that if I had fallen in love with a woman, in many states I would not be able to marry her. And practically speaking, I wouldn’t be able to be placed on her insurance plan, as I would if we were a conventional couple. So when it was time to start a family, I’d be forced to work outside the home if I wanted to receive health benefits, when I truly wanted to stay home and raise my kids. Knowing this type of situation exists I deemed it important to write romantic stories of same-sex couples, to show that their love is as valid as any M/F couple’s love.

Within the LGBTQ spectrum, I have written YA novels- f/f- Come to My Window, m/m- Intervention, Not Broken, Just Bent, The Red Sheet, Inclination, m/m/m- Us Three, gender fluid- Love Spell, and I am currently working on a transgender teen story. My new release, “A Hard Day’s Night” is a YA m/m novella, which is a first for me.

And I have written what is considered New Adult, m/m- Here Without You, Beggars and Choosers, Unfinished Business, Out of Hiding, and an m/m…f (with a very significant female character) called A Package Deal.

I have even written an m/m adult called Random Acts.

I like to cover a lot of bases, but all of my stories are contemporary romances (my web site theme is “Love is what I See”) dealing with current societal issues.

Do you have a favorite? Or one you’ve not explored but want to?

I’m currently doing research on experiences of transgender teens and on the medical aspects of transition because I’m planning to write a story about a transgender teen. I’m not rushing this research, as I want my story to be authentic.

How do you keep the voice of your YA characters current?

I have several secret methods of keeping current… First, having three teenagers and a twenty-one-year-old who all Facebook message me, text me pictures of their outfits, and call or sit down in the living room with me to discuss their challenges, keeps me up to date on teen issues and language, as well as what is cool and not so cool. My second way of staying current is… that I’m an inner fifteen-year-old. This is the secret part of the answer, so please don’t mention it to anybody. I like what teenagers like—the shows on TV, the music, the clothes. One of my daughters recently commented on my attire—an oversized button down army shirt, a rainbow tank that reads Vampire Weekend, black Doc Martens boots, and seriously ripped boyfriend jeans—saying she has the only mother in town who looks like a badass Indie grunge band member. I can also be very preppy when I want to be, for the record.

Do you let your children read your books before you publish them to check to see if your voice is accurate?

One of my daughters has read almost all of my books and she coaches me on current language, popular culture, and even clothing. I have dedicated a few of my books to her!

Recently I saw an article that said despite far more people coming out earlier, the number of homeless LGBT teens has skyrocketed. Do you think we paint too rosy a picture in our YA novels?

I don’t think that I do, and I do not see an overly rosy picture portrayed in the type of YA novel that I read. In my YA novels, I deal with a lot of the hard stuff that kids are faced with. In my YA and New Adult novels, I have looked at sexual abuse, neglect, body image issues, religious conflict, bullying, death of a parent, depression, gender questioning and more. I have a book that is due to be released in December that deals with teen drug and alcohol abuse. I use humor in many of my books with serious topics, as I believe that it is most effective to get people to really think about what you are saying as an author when you speak to them in a style to which they can comfortably listen. Humor feels comfortable for many people.

Before we get to your latest book, I want to ask about Love Spell. There aren’t many gender fluid books, YA or otherwise. What inspired you to write Love Spell.

I attended a National Honor Society induction of a relative and was very intrigued by a boy who wore a beautiful sleek suit and very high black pumps for the occasion. I asked my young relative about this boy, who is gender fluid, and how the other students and teachers at school reacted to him, and the answer further inspired me. That is when Chance César, with all of his haughty attitude and creative vocabulary and fabulous view of life, was born. But on a more serious note, I feel that every child (teen) should be able to go to the bookshelf at a local library or to Amazon.com and find books that he/she can truly relate to.  Kids whose gender identity is unclear or unconventional deserve to be able to find themselves in books. I am working on making that happen.

Can you share and feedback you’ve received as a result of your work? Anyone contact you to say thanks?

Interestingly, when I first started writing I established my [email protected] address and put it in the back of my first few books. And then I promptly forgot all about it. In fact, I didn’t check it for months and months and when I finally checked it, there was a lot of fan mail that I had essentially ignored. (I did get back to these readers and I apologized for my huge oversight. But I will admit it was shocking to actually have fan mail!) And some of my beta readers are actually readers who have reached out to me to let me know how much they enjoyed my work. They have become friends and I consider them mentors.

Let’s talk A Hard Day’s Night. Tell us about that.

I fell in love with each member of the Beatles, individually, when I was in high school. My biggest crush was on John Lennon. I wanted to write a book that remembers the awesomeness of the Beatles, and in particular, the worldview of John Lennon. And I wanted to attack this book as a twenty-four hour slice of life—reminiscent of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. And so Lennon and Fin together experience a journey of sorts: a very hard day, capped off by an even harder night.

“A Hard Day’s Night” is a book about exploring and accepting one’s identity. Lennon, the main character in whose perspective the story I told, has long found his identity in the persona of John Lennon. He goes so far as to wear his hair long and shaggy like his idol, and of course, wears round, wire-rimmed glasses. But Lennon has come to believe that he is gay, and to complicate this, he is fairly sure that he has fallen in love with his best friend, Fin. Fin (Beaumont Finely Danforth ll) has a different kind of identity to nurture. Former prep school student, preppy as a summer day is long, from a wealthy and successful family, he is somewhat trapped by high expectations.

As I stated, “A Hard Day’s Night” is a story about identity, and relating to this, there is an important lesson that the two boys learn, and it is about stereotypes. The boys think that in order to be gay, you have to be a gay stereotype. And so they explore many of these stereotypes close up. They learn a lot about a gay man’s identity in the process.

Where did you get the premise for spending twenty-four hours being gay?

I was enchanted by the book Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. It was raw, it was real, and it honestly displayed the insecurities and inner feelings of teenagers. And it started and ended in a set time and space, like a trip.

I also think a lot about stereotypes. And I am fairly certain that teenagers do, too. Stereotypes scare teens, as they are nothing but exaggerated caricatures of people, and they are not designed to flatter. So why not have my two main characters take a trip, a one day trip (Day Tripper, yeah) like Nick and Norah did, to explore the truth of the stereotype that scares them and intrigues them most—a day long trip that will lead Lennon and Fin to the truth of their identities.

What part of the book was the most fun to write and why?

The hair salon scene was Fun. Capital F. I laughed out loud when I created the stylist, “Chard”, when I decided upon the name of the salon, “The Best Little Hair House in Westfield”, and when I created the boys’ reactions to being beautified. However, later in the scene there is a touching moment, which enhances the earlier humor. In my humble opinion.

What part made you struggle the most?

Choosing which Beatles songs to include was very difficult for me, as I love so much of their music and so many of their songs deal with the topics relating to the themes of “A Hard Day’s Night” such as understanding your identity, falling in love, and dealing with emotional angst. All are perfect subjects to enhance a teenage romance.

Maybe a series that uses different Beatles songs?

That is a fantastic idea. If I use it, I will credit you!

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

I wish I included more about the fact that sometimes it isn’t a huge step from friends to lovers when you allow yourself to open your mind, because Lennon and Fin are so made for each other, and they couldn’t embrace it because it wasn’t what they expected of each other.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

I am exploring the idea that two people can fall in love regardless of their sexual orientation. I am not crazy about the expression “gay for you” but the book I’m working on will take a look at two college men who helped one another through a difficult time in their lives and find that they do not want to live without each other. And they want to be committed to each other as a couple, not just in a close friendship. So, in essence, the book asks the question, can deep love and true need and a profound bond produce romantic love?

I also have a YA transgender story for which I am doing research.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Remember I said I was an inner fifteen-year-old? Well, I meant it. I would love to meet Twilight’s Stephenie Meyer and ask her to please complete Midnight Sun, the Twilight story she was writing from Edward Cullen’s perspective.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

    Ali

    Demi

    Sisi

    Chris

    And Randy

(My kids and my husband, and every thing they do.)

And true crime on the Investigation Discovery Channel. Can’t forget that.

And the Boston Red Sox. (But more so when we’re not in last place.)

    Blurb:

A HARD DAY'S NIGHT FRONT COVER-03 SHigh school senior Kalin (Lennon) Macready knows several facts for certain: John Lennon is his hero. Beaumont Finley Danforth (Fin) is his best friend. And—this is the complicated one—he feels more for Fin than mere friendship.

For weeks, Lennon pesters Fin, who like Lennon admits to questioning his sexual orientation, for a commitment to spend twenty-four hours together exploring “the gay side of life.” Fin reluctantly agrees. Each boy will seek to answer the daunting question, Am I gay? Lennon pre-plans the day, filling the hours with what he assumes “gay life” is all about: shopping for fashionable clothing, indulging in lavish dessert crepes, boogying to Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off”, and yes, listening to show tunes.

However, Lennon quickly realizes that in creating his plan he has succumbed to the most common and distorted of gay stereotypes. Can he be gay and not fit them? And more importantly, is it possible that spending one very hard day and night together will help Fin accept that he’s gay, too? If so, maybe Lennon has a shot at winning the heart of the boy of his dreams.

“A Hard Day’s Night” is an amusing young adult contemporary romance about two boys who seek to discover if they must fulfill stereotypes to be together.

In the end, maybe all you need is love.

    About the Author:

Mia kerick Bio PicMs. Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five non-pedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty-two years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young people and their relationships, and she believes that physical intimacy has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping.

She is thankful to CoolDudes Publishing, Dreamspinner Press, Harmony Ink Press, and CreateSpace for providing her with alternate places to stash her stories.

Mia is a social liberal and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of human rights, especially marital equality, which is now the law of the land in the United States—woot! woot! Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.
