  • New Releases: Monday August 19, 2013

All authors face the same daunting task – how to get their book noticed. In an effort to help some of my fellow authors, every Monday I’m going to post some of the numerous new books that have been released. For the most part these will be M/M Fiction with a heavy bias on Romance. That will probably evolve over time, but for now that’s were it is.

I’ve not read everything that is listed, though I’ve probably read or will read many. Which means inclusion on the list isn’t an endorsement or suggestion. You should read the blurbs provided to see if you’re interested. I’ll post reviews to books I recommend under the ‘Books I Reviewed’ tab. This is just a partial list of what’s new for visitors of my site to check out. That said if you end up reading something listed here and want to comment – please do. I reserve the right, however, to delete nasty or personal comments.

If you’re an author and want to include a new release, email me your blurb, cover image, buy links and any personal links you want included. No excerpts, interviews, giveaways etc. Those are welcome, but can be discussed separately.

Baxter is drawn to the new young hand, but he’s deeply closeted, and after an openly gay veterinarian shows he’s interested in Matty, Baxter’s repressed feelings lead to an explosive encounter. • The Race Is On – Book Two of – How The Light Gets In: By Lily Velden

    TheRaceIsOn temp banner

I don’t usually write separate blog posts to push the work of other authors, but then Lily isn’t just another author to me, she is a dear friend.  There are many wonderful things I could say about her as a person – and well, yes maybe all the gifts she’s sent ‘lil q had a teeny tiny hand in that, but this goes well beyond that – but I want to talk about her new book; The Race Is On.

[Just to be clear, Lily didn’t ask me to do this and in fact she might be a tad miffed with me for doing it, but I’ll risk her ire just this once.]

I’ll try to be honest with this post, because I really think all those: ‘Buy this book!” or “Worth The Money!” or “Best book in a long time” ‘reviews are just platitudes of friends and aren’t worth the pixels needed to write them. When I read all the five star reviews from people who are clearly ‘friends’ of the author and they do little to explain why the book is so worth it, or the best in a while, I ignore them or worst start looking for what I’d consider an honest review and that generally means a bad one.

So while I think all those rave reviews are true for Lily and her work, I want to go a bit beyond that. [I will of course link you to a wonderful review of the book from a review site just to show you that I’m not totally alone in my views.]

For me, the most important part of a ‘good book’ is the characters. It’s been said that every plot has been written already in some variation or another and that what makes a book worth buying is how the author makes it their own. This is another way of saying, the characters are really important. When you read one of Lily’s books, you find the characters feel like real people. Not characters in a book so much as people Lily knows and who she is watching and writing about. You walk away feeling like these are now friends of yours who you will think about from time to time and wonder what they are doing or how their lives are going. To me that is a book worth reading.

So if you feel like I do and want a book with excellent characters, ones you will laugh and cry with and wish you could meet in person – buy one of Lily’s books.

    SamePage_headerbanner

If you’ve not read Same Page,  you should buy that one first.  If you need more proof – here’s a link to a review that said:

Extremely well written, emotional and passionate, Same Page is a love story at heart. Jaxon and Liam are three-dimensional characters with flaws and depth. Velden even gives us some page worthy secondary characters with Garrett and Alison, the two leading men’s respective best friends. Who, coincidentally, end up falling in love with each other. I anxiously await book 2 in this series, I’d pre-order it if Dreamspinner had it listed! HIGHLY recommend this book.

  • PITCH: By Will Parkinson – Book Blog Tour

    pitch-blog-tour-600x157

Today I have the privilege of being allowed to host part of Will Parkinson’s PITCH blog tour.  Will has brought a few things to share in addition to his giveaway.  First there is a prequel of sorts. Will shares a short story that introduces us to one of the main characters, Jackson Kern.  The story takes place before the event in PITCH.

Next you’ll get to read an interview with Jackson. This gives us a bit more insight into the person who captives Taylor Andrew’s every waking  – and some sleeping – moment.

Then there is an excerpt from the book. This is a nice introduction to the book itself.

Oh yes, there is a giveaway.  Read on to the end and you’ll find a link. It’s easy to enter, so don’t forget to do that after you’ve read all that WIll has sent along.

Finally, I wrote a review for the book.  you can find it on my site under reviews or you can click the link:

The Truth about Riley FB cover - author

The Truth About Riley; by Henrietta Clarke

    Blurb:

The Truth about Riley 600x900(1)Riley Aylworth’s life has been completely devoid of intimate contact since a fire three years ago left him with horrific facial scarring, so when he finds an ad for a phone sex service, he decides to give it a call. Except that the number is not a phone sex service—it’s the revenge Cameron Kirkwood’s ex-boyfriend took on the uptight advertising executive after Cam forgot their anniversary and accidentally put him in the hospital. Needless to say, after thirty-nine disturbing calls seeking phone sex, Cameron is at the end of his tether and yells at his fortieth caller. What he doesn’t expect is for Riley to hit redial and yell right back.

The argument helps both Cameron and Riley vent about their issues, and when they’ve calmed down, they decide to exchange numbers and talk again. From this decision springs a friendship that, over time, grows into a gentle romance—all over the phone, because Riley is too scared to meet Cam in person. Showing a potential boyfriend his disfigured face is the fastest way to get rejected, right? Even a month of scorching hot phone sex can’t change his mind, no matter how hard Cam tries to persuade him that with their phone chemistry, the sex would be so much better in person.

Meanwhile, Cam is haunted by the scarred blond he seems to be seeing everywhere, and Riley can’t get the handsome brunet who always seems happy to see him out of his mind. It’s a shock to both men to realise that the guy they’re falling for over the phone is also the man who brightens their day with just a smile; but it’s one thing to let a stranger smile at you and quite another to let him close enough to see into your soul. If Riley can’t break down the walls in his mind and believe that Cameron loves him in spite of his scars, their relationship may be doomed before they’ve even had a chance to kiss.

    Author Bio:

Henrietta Clarke is a quirky Yorkshire lass who had the misfortune to discover the path she was actually meant to take in life three days into an intensive postgraduate course. Now free from the hell of law study, she divides her time between working as a lunchtime supervisor in a primary school, training as a fiction editor, and writing her own stories. When she’s not working, Henrietta can usually be found in the kitchen, hanging out with her parents and eccentric dogs or baking cupcakes. Every remaining second is spent reading or sleeping—sometimes simultaneously.

A hopeless romantic who is as much in love with the English language as with all the delicious fictional men it creates, Henrietta suffers from abibliophobia and has a serious book-buying addiction as a consequence. The day there are no unread items on her Kindle will be the day the Earth stops turning. Her other addictions include bad TV and chilli in any form, and she collects everything from books and DVDs to china elephants, keyrings and photo frames—most of which stay empty far too long. She has a minor obsession with rainbows, and plots everything in purple Sharpie.

    Author Bio:

Brynn Stein has always been a bibliophile and a closet writer. Many years ago, she found the joys of writing fanfiction, which provided an opportunity to “come out of the closet” with her writing. She enjoyed some success writing fiction for various fandoms—even winning several awards, but noticed that she liked writing “alternate universe” stories, meaning that, except for the names and vague situations in common with the fandom she was writing for, most of the story was original. When the opportunity came along to finally publish original fiction, she grabbed it with both hands.

Brynn lives in Virginia with her two two-legged children, and four four-legged ones. Her supportive family encourages her writing and provides a sounding board for fledgling stories. When she isn’t writing, Brynn teaches children with special needs and edits other people’s manuscripts. In free time, she reads anything she can get her hands on, and haunts bookstores. She draws and paints, and enjoys the outdoors—especially if she can get to the beach—and is always thinking about her next story.

    chosen_promoBlurb:

Love or duty – which would you choose

The neighbouring kingdoms of Oscia and Arcathia have been at a tentative
peace for three years after centuries of warfare. Prince Severin of
Arcathia has been brought up to put duty before all else and as the only
son of the King and Queen, it is his duty to marry and produce an heir.
His parents want him to marry an Oscian princess to cement that tentative
peace. Unfortunately Severin isn’t interested in princesses. Now, if he
had his pick of princes that would be another matter.

Havyn has been a slave all his life. When his aptitude for wizardry is
discovered, he finds himself purchased and freed by Prince Severin and
apprenticed to the royal wizard, Ildar. His duty is to stay chaste to keep
his powers strong, but his feelings for Severin sorely test his resolve.

    Review excerpts:

“Annette Gisby is one of my new favorite authors to watch out for. The
Chosen was simply a fantastic mixture of passion, longing, magic and
kingdom intrigue.” – Bitten by Books

“The way Severin and Havyn fight their attraction even as each of them
continue to crave each other was heartbreaking. This was a really good
novel, one that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and remember for quite some
    time.” – Coffee Time Romance

    Author Bio:

Annette Gisby grew up in a small town in Northern Ireland, moving to
London when she was seventeen. Being a very small town there were no
bookshops and a small library. When she’d devoured every book she could
get her hands on in the library, she started writing her own stories so
she would always have something to read later.

When not writing she enjoys reading, cinema, theatre, walks along deserted
beaches or wandering around ruined castles (great places for inspiration!)
New Zealand is her favourite place and she hopes to travel back there one
day. She’s a fan of Japanese Manga and Anime and one day hopes to learn
    Japanese.

She currently lives in Hampshire with her husband, a collection of
porcelain dolls and stuffed penguins and enough books to fill a small

    About The Author

Renee Stevens resides in Wyoming with her husband, and while they have no two-legged kids, they have plenty of the four legged variety.  With three canines and three felines, her life is never boring.  When not sitting in front of her laptop working on her next story, Renee prefers to escape to the great outdoors.

Renee began writing in her early teens but didn’t get serious about being an author until her mid-twenties.  Since then she has written a number of stories, most of which can be found online for free.  She hopes to e-publish a few more of her works in the very near future.

While she does have some modern pieces, her favorite characters to work with are shifters and vampires.  When not writing, camping, or refereeing the critters, Renee spends her time as a Moderator and the Anthology Coordinator over at GayAuthors.org.

Thick As Thieves: by Tali Spencer

    ThickAsThieves2Blurb:

After Vorgell the barbarian fucks himself with a unicorn horn, he ends up in a cell with Maddog, a pretty young thief. It’s lust at first sight for Vorgell—but honestly, he can’t help it. Unicorn horn is a potent aphrodisiac, and now he can’t stop thinking about sex. Luckily, Madd is one male witch who knows how to put Vorgell’s new magical body to good use when he tricks Vorgell into a kiss that helps them escape.

Vorgell may desire sex in general—and Madd in particular—but Madd has no intention of being screwed by a man twice his size. He has problems of his own, including an enchanted collar that causes him to desire his most hated enemy. He wants that collar off as soon as possible, but that requires stealing a basilisk egg from the castle they just escaped.

Drawn together by lust and magic, the two men join forces and soon find themselves up to their necks in witches, wizards, and trouble. Vorgell and Madd might just be perfect for each other, but first they have to survive long enough to find out.

    Author Bio

Tali Spencer fell in love with writing at an early age and never stopped. Thanks to a restless father, she grew up as a bit of a nomad and still loves to travel whenever she can. Her longest stint in one place was Milwaukee where she went to college and enjoyed a series of interesting careers including respiratory therapist, airport executive, and raising three surprisingly well-adjusted sons. She later married her true love and put down new roots in Philadelphia, where she lives in an ongoing Italian American family sitcom. At least she’s learned how make good pasta. When not writing, Tali reads everything from sweet goofy romances to Lebanese cookbooks, manages her fantasy football team—go Gekkos!—and takes long walks with her loving, if slightly neurotic, poodle.

But when he arrives, he finds that the house looks nothing like the ad… and it’s haunted as well.

  • New Releases: Monday July 1, 2013

Only had a few requests this week, so if anyone wants to be included for next week, email and let me know.

Taboo For You: By Anyta Sunday

    Blurb:

    cover3_front

Sam’s freaking out. He’s 30 in three weeks. And what has he done in his twenties? It’s pretty simple math: nothing exciting at all. But hey, he has three weeks right? Maybe that’s just enough time to tick his way through a 20s Must Do List . . .

Luke’s freaking screwed. He’s come out to his family, and his friends. Except there’s a certain someone who doesn’t know yet: his neighbor of 7 years. Who also happens to be his best friend. Who Luke needs to tell the truth, but he just . . . can’t . . . seem to . . .

Jeremy’s freaking over-the-moon. It’s the countdown to his 15th birthday, and his goal is simple. No matter what, he’s going to spend heaps of time with saucy Suzy. But first he needs to get his over-protective, no-girlfriend-’cause-you’ll-get-her-pregnant parents off his back. And what better way than pretending he’s gay?

Sam, Luke, and Jeremy. Three guys who have a lot of history together, and a lot of future too—

—well, if they can sort out their issues, that is.

Children Of The Knight: By Michael J. Bowler

    Blurb:

Children of the Knight Hi Res CoverAccording to legend, King Arthur is supposed to return when Britain needs him most. So why does a man claiming to be the once and future king suddenly appear in Los Angeles?

This charismatic young Arthur creates a new Camelot within the City of Angels to lead a crusade of unwanted kids against an adult society that discards and ignores them. Under his banner of equality, every needy child is welcome, regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, or gang affiliation.

With the help of his amazing First Knight, homeless fourteen-year-old Lance, Arthur transforms this ragtag band of rejected children and teens into a well-trained army—the Children of the Knight. Through his intervention, they win the hearts and minds of the populace at large, and gain a truer understanding of themselves and their worth to society. But seeking more rights for kids pits Arthur and the children squarely against the rich, the influential, and the self-satisfied politicians who want nothing more than to maintain the status quo.

Can right truly overcome might? Arthur’s hopeful young knights are about to find out, and the City of Angels will never be the same.

    About The Author:

Michael J. Bowler is an award-winning author of three novels––A Boy and His Dragon, A Matter of Time, and Children of the Knight––who grew up in San Rafael, California.

He majored in English and Theatre at Santa Clara University and earned a master’s in film production from Loyola Marymount and another master’s in Special Education from Cal State Dominguez Hills.

He partnered with two friends as producer, writer, and/or director on several ultra-low-budget horror films including “Fatal Images,” “Club Dead,” and “Things II.” These films are often unintentionally funny, but the reviews are intentionally snarky and hilarious. Checking out the reviews is much more fun than watching the movies.

He taught high school in Hawthorne, California for a number of years, both general education and to students with learning disabilities in subjects ranging from qualified areas like English and Strength Training to he-doesn’t-know-what-he’s-doing-but-was-forced-to-teach-these-subjects-anyway areas like Algebra and Biology. (Oh, well, he and the students had fun, anyway.)

He has also been a volunteer Big Brother to seven different boys with the Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters program and a long-time volunteer within the juvenile justice system in Los Angeles.  He is a passionate advocate for the fair treatment of children and teens in California, something that is sorely lacking in this state. Sadly, he knows far too many youth in prison. While some people tour the California Mission system on their summer vacations, he often tours the California prison system visiting these throwaway kids, reminding them they are not and never will be forgotten.

He has been honored as Probation Volunteer of the Year, YMCA Volunteer of the Year, California Big Brother of the Year, and National Big Brother of the Year. The “National” honor allowed he and three of his Little Brothers to visit the White House and meet the president in the Oval Office.

He has already completed the sequel to Children of the Knight and is hard at work on the third volume in the trilogy.

    Blurb:

KnighttoRemember[A]“The last of your line will be in the embrace of a dragon.”

Aric, Crown Prince of Astria, has been brought up to believe that all dragons are evil. But when he speaks with one, he finds himself questioning those beliefs. The dragon tells him to find a sword in Sherwin Forest to save not only his kingdom but also his sister, Georgia, who must otherwise wed the prince of a neighboring kingdom.

At the start of his quest, Aric dons a disguise and meets Denys, an archer and herbalist who lives alone at the edge of the forest. Denys agrees to guide Aric into the forest, but then Georgia appears, revealing Aric’s true identity.

However Aric learns he is not the only one keeping secrets. Denys has a few of his own that could change both of their lives forever.

    About the Author:

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand.  She shares her home with two cats who are convinced that the house is run to suit them; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date it appears as though the cats may be winning.

In 2008 she completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra.

She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth.

Making It Personal 600x900Blake Davis is in the closet. And he’s going to stay that way. Because if his father finds out he’s gay, Blake could lose everything he’s worked so hard to achieve during the last six years as CEO of Trinity Publishing, the fastest rising star in the publishing firmament. Not that coming out wouldn’t solve a couple of problems. Maybe then his father would stop trying to set him up with yet another empty-headed, social-climbing girlfriend. And better still, Blake could stop using that escort agency when he wants a night of hot sex with a cute guy…

Will Parkinson has had a tough life so far, but he’s back on his feet. Okay, so he’s working as an escort – with ‘benefits’– to pay off his student loans, but that does have its advantages, such as the really hot guy who hired him. Yeah, Blake rocked his world last night – several  times. So imagine how Will feels when he arrives to be interviewed for his dream job as PA in a publishing company, and the guy who’s hiring is….. Blake.

And then things get really complicated….
