Puppies and Toddlers and Dogs – Oh My!

Okay, so how cliche is it that the gay man paraphrases a Judy Garland movie? Never mind.

As I mentioned, we have puppies – Six to be exact. For those who don’t know, Emma is a Vizsla, a Hungarian Pointer. There’s a whole lot that went into getting us to now, do shows, learning to show, getting the points for a championship, finding the right stud dog to complement each other, etc. Mike did all that. I just help were I can.

‘lil q is very curious and already loves them. She has to see them when she gets up and before she goes to bed. Last night she wanted to see them being born, so we let her see some a very limited some, and she was good with it. I’m still surprised by the lack of questions on this topic, but I’m totally not complaining. During the height of the delivery, I took her to get ice-cream to distract her. Works every time.

One last thing before I show the pups, the breeder tends to give them temporary names that go with a theme. Each pup gets their own collar and that way we always know which one is which. because we only have one girl, she didn’t get a collar because, well she’s fabulous enough already. 😀 Mike and I decided that since our two hobbies are over lapping—he’s got puppies and I have a new release—we’re going to give them names from my Champion of the Gods series. So here goes:

This is Farrell – he’s the smallest, but he’s feisty.

These are Grohl (green) and Takala (blue) – after the peregrine brothers who adopt Farrell as their brother.

Grohl was crying when mama went to eat so I was holding him. This is when he pooped on my arm. Such love.

They are all super adorable! I’m sure it’ll be difficult to give them up, especially when they get their legs and start running around, developing their own personalities. You’ll love each and every one. When I was in college, the apartment we were living in was originally a house at the end of the dead-end street that was turn into four apartments. We were on the bottom floor had woods behind our apartment and in those woods was a feral cat colony. So of course, I had to do something about it. Once kittens were old enough, we would capture them, give them a flea baths, make sure that they were litter box trained and sociable enough to find new homes and then do so via Facebook or the theatre department rumor mill. During that time, I found homes for about 12 kittens and hi to mama cats spayed.

Apparently we had sucker written on her apartment door in a visible in, because one day my roommate stepped outside and found a dog in a photo leather carrying case with a graded gold leash wrapped around it. Inside was a young, miniature Dachshund pup. Extremely friendly and an absolute sweetheart. It soon became clear as to why she was abandoned on our doorstep. She suffered from severe social anxiety. More than likely she had belong to a sorostitute Who didn’t have the time or patience to either train the pop or take her to a vet I’m trying to figure out a way for the dog not to shit on the floor every time the puppy was left home alone. We quickly found a home for her through our landlords maintenance man. Heidi, as she was named, went to live on a 5 acre farm where she could spend her days playing with another dog, a black lab, and chase guinea Hens and squirrels all day.

Even today, almost 10 years later, I have friends from either school or multiple gigs from when I was still touring and working in theatre, ( even my family) will call me with questions on what to do with not only feral cats, but all sorts of rescued animals. These days I have three kitties myself, one a rescue. The youngest one, Nyx, is only four months old while Calypso is one and Bast is about three or four. We also have an iguana, Rex, and a rescued dog named Dobby it was severely abused by his previous owners. For the first two years of his life he had never stepped outside of the crate. To this day we still have issues with him not being potty trained.

After that whole diatribe, I have a question for you: do you breed your dogs often, or is this their first litter? Why do you breed them? My ex-husband and I almost decided to breed our miniature schnauzer, Loki, at one point but decided not to.

  This was the first litter. Mike enjoys showing dogs and he’s gotten pretty good at it. He wanted to take it to the next level breed the dogs he shows and to show the dogs he breeds. He’s quite the natural with the dogs, so it’s good. My role is support. 😀

OMG Andrew, your Daughter is just totally adorable and so cute. I’m sure you and Mike must be the proudest parents ever. Your puppies are really cute too and their Mama is a beautiful dog.
